House committee clears “21st Century Cures” legislation.

On May 21, the House Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously approved wide-ranging legislation that would make modifications to how the Food and Drug Administration reviews drugs and devices in order to promote more rapid adoption of groundbreaking treatments.

Edward Goodman, Vice President of Public Policy – Prior to joining VHA in 1987, Goodman was director of government relations for Partners National Health Plans, a joint venture company owned by VHA and Aetna Life Insurance Company. Goodman served as a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service from 1976 until 1985. His assignments included serving as chief of the federal HMO program qualification branch and policy development responsibilities for the federal Professional Standards Review Organization program.Goodman holds a bachelor's degree in communications from Ohio University and a master's degree in hospital and health care administration from the University of Minnesota.

Cidette Perrin, Senior Director, Government Relations – Perrin came to VHA in April 2001, after serving as director of legislative and regulatory affairs at the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems, where she was employed for nine years. Before that, she served as legislative liaison for the National Federation of Societies for Clinical Social Work, a professional association of masters-level social workers. Perrin holds a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Colorado and a master's degree in health care administration, specializing in long-term care, from the George Washington University.
